INTERVIEW WITH ROBYN RED ABOUT JUST NEED THE WINE AND HER C2C EXPERIENCE
Last Friday (28th March), Scottish singer-songwriter, Robyn Red released her latest single, Just Need The Wine, and I caught up with her to discuss the song as well as her C2C experience in both Glasgow and London earlier this month.
Hi Robyn. Thank you very much for finding the time to speak with me, its a privilege to be featuring you. How are you?
I'm doing really good, thanks. There's been a lot going on with releasing the new singles off my up coming EP and lots of live shows to prepare for.
Before we go any further can I please ask you to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Robyn Red. I'm a country-pop singer/songwriter from just outside Glasgow in Airdrie.
Last Friday, you released your brand new single, Just Need The Wine can you please tell us a little about the song?
This is song is about going out having fun, having a little too much to drink and letting the alcohol telling you what to do.
Where did the inspiration for the song came from?
This song was lot of fun to write. I wrote it when I went to a house party sober and I walked into the house and it was crazy. Drinks spilled everywhere, people arguing and when I walked into the bathroom my best friend was being sick in the bath. Secretly I wanted to be getting on their level of drunk with some red wine but instead I was babysitting. I took all these memories home with me and wrote "Just Need The Wine".
I have nothing but praise for your songwriting and the storytelling throughout Just Need The Wine as it reminded me so much of a younger me.
How long did Just Need The Wine take to write, record and release? This question really intrigues me.
I don't think this song took me long to write because it was such a chaotic experience. I must've been about 20 minutes maybe. For the recording process it took us a day to get in and record it and another day to get it mix and mastered. Graeme and Jamie Duffin are great and we managed to get the full EP done in four days. Then to release it just a really easy process but we had it recorded in January and released in March!
How would you describe Just Need The Wine in 3 words?
Chaotic, fun, comedic.
You recently performed at C2C Glasgow and London, how was that for you?
I've played Glasgow the past couple of years and it is always a pleasure to play there. Its my hometown so I see a lot of familiar faces and its so heartwarming. However, it was my first time playing London and its safe to say I picked up a lot of new fans there as well as seeing some familiar faces which was really nice. I was not expecting the London stages to be as busy as they were for me. To be honest, I was gobsmacked when I went on stage. After that full weekend I was so overwhelmed with the support I got in both Glasgow and London.
How would you say that both venues differ from one another?
The two venues are very different. Glasgow is so much smaller than London. In Glasgow, there are two small stages in little rooms which is great for a small intimate feel. In London, there are lots of smaller stages but nothing like Glasgow. Its a lot more open and more people can get in and really make it feel like you're playing on a big stage! Both cities are great but London just has a little more to offer.
What was your favourite song to perform?
My favourite song to perform was one of mine "When The Sun Sets". During this song I get the audience to take part and they definitely delivered in both cities. Hearing the lyrics to your own songs being sung back to you is a feeling you can't really describe.
How would you sum up your C2C experience?
My C2C experience was such an unforgettable one! I'm definitely going to remember this for a long long time.
Before we end this interview, I have to ask what are your plans for the rest of 2025? Can you tease anything?
This year will see me release my debut EP which I am really proud of and think its my best work yet. I will be headlining King Tuts in Glasgow on June 7th to celebrate the launch of the EP. I will also be doing a lot of support slots and playing a lot of festivals all over the UK and there are lots of things still to be announced!
Thank you very much for your time, Robyn!
