INTERVIEW WITH TIGIRLILY GOLD AS THEY RELEASE THEIR DEBUT ALBUM, BLONDE

Following the release of their debut album, Blonde today (Friday 26th July), I was lucky enough to catch up with sisters Kendra and Krista aka Tigirlily Gold to talk about their debut album as well as what their plans are for the rest of 2024.

Hey Kendra and Krista, Congratulations on your debut album being released today - how are you feeling about people to hear the album?
We are so excited for Blonde to finally be out. We started working on this record three years ago and are so incredibly proud of it. We can’t wait for people to choose their favorite songs!

Some of your fans were lucky enough during C2C to attend your first UK fan club party, how was that for you?
We absolutely love touring over in the UK. That fan party was so special because that was our very first fan party over in the UK and the first time we shared the recorded version of “Bleeding Love” with anybody. It’s so cool to see the support we’ve received from the UK, and we plan on being back very soon.

I also have to say a MASSIVE congratulations on your win of 'New Duo of the Year' at this year's ACM Awards, how was that for you? Your performances were fantastic too.
Winning an ACM award was such a validating moment in our career. That week was truly the best week of our lives. Since we won the award for New Duo of the Year, we got to perform "I Tried A Ring On" at the ACM awards, and it was such an incredible experience to share our music with so many new country fans for the first time. Kendra and I have been a band for 12 years now, and that award made all the hard work over the years worth it.

Now to talk about Blonde which is made up of 10 tracks (9 of which you wrote or co-wrote), what was the process like writing them?
Writing for the Blonde project was so much fun. We wrote around 40 to 60 songs for the project! The first song that made the record though was "Blonde." Once we wrote that song, we locked in the whole essence of the record, which is girl-group-energy and channelling a “blonde state of mind." We cut two outside songs on the record, "Leroy" and "Bleeding Love." We tested all these songs out live before recording them to make sure we chose the right songs for the album, and we truly feel like these 10 songs give listeners a true sense of Tigirlily Gold.

How did you settle on the title of the EP, Blonde?
As mentioned before, "Blonde" really captures the whole essence of the record. "Blonde" is all about having a Dolly Parton state of mind. You don’t actually have to be blonde to be blonde... it’s about channelling that inner confidence, being bold, vulnerable, unfiltered, and not being afraid to poke fun at yourself when life doesn’t go your way.

What was the songwriting process like for the album? How long did it take to complete?
The album Blonde took three years from writing the first song to releasing it. We took our time to make sure these ten songs are exactly what we want to say and sound like. After all, you only get one debut record.

Out of curiosity, how long did Blonde take to record?
We wrote for about a year, and then we started tracking in 2022. The record was finished in 2023.

You chose to release your version of Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love, what is it that you love about the song so much that made you want to record your own version?
Kendra and I used to play four hour cover sets in downtown Nashville, and "Bleeding Love" was a song that we always enjoyed covering. But after we got off of Broadway, we continued to keep "Bleeding Love" in the set. We rearranged the song and made it feel like our own. it’s such a beautiful song and we hope we can do it justice with our country version.

How would you describe Blonde in 3 words?
Confident, bold, bleached.

You performed at CMA festival last month, what was that like?
CMA Fest is truly the best festival for fans. We love meeting people from all over the world, and CMA Fest brings everybody together in the name of country music. We also got to throw a party for people as well and played them some of the new record.

What are you plans for the rest of 2024?
Kendra and I will always continue to make music and tour. You can expect more of that always.

Quick-fire question time...

Favourite song on the album?
We both love the song “I Tried a Ring On” if we had to pick a favorite. Shoot Tequila and Stupid Prizes are our favorite to play live.

Favourite song you wrote on the album?
I Tried A Ring On

Easiest song you wrote of the album?
"Blonde" was the easiest song to write. It came out in two hours and felt like a very natural process.

Do you mostly write the chorus first or did you write the hook first?
We usually land on an idea first. Then we come up with the vibe, but we start on different parts of the song with each individual song depending on what it needs.

Did you prefer writing happy or sad songs?
I, Krista, prefer writing happy songs, and Kendra loves a good sad song.

Thank you very much for your time, Kendra and Krista. I am incredibly grateful.
