CORONATION STREET EPISODE REVIEW FOR SPECIAL MND EPISODE

Tonight's episode (Friday 26th July) of Coronation Street was a special episode dedicated to Paul Foreman's MND journey as he and his husband, Billy Mayhew had a very special day in some emotional scenes.

Tonight's episode was written wonderfully by Debbie Oates, directed by Vicky Thomas and produced by Verity MacLeod. Thank you for your attention to detail and care with this episode.

The episode opened with a dream like sequel that was beautifully thought through with Peter Ash's voiceover being timed brilliantly allowing for many emotional and heartfelt moments.

The way that Billy comforted his husband, Paul throughout the episode within their special moments that were powerful with the way that it captured thanks to Vicky's attention to detail with camera angles especially the close ups especially during the heart-to-heart moments.

The attention to detail during their trip to the church where they got married in heartfelt moments and the flashbacks to their wedding day were emotional - Daniel Brocklebank and Peter Ash do the emotional moments so well. It was great how all Paul's favourite people were in the episode sharing a happy moment which was beautiful to see as you could see how much the ones featured meant to Paul.

Todd Grimshaw friendship with Paul has been one that can only be described as a rollercoaster over the years, but over the past few months he has really been there for Paul and Billy, however, tonight saw the vulnerable side of Todd come through as all he wanted to do was help his friend.

An important lesson from this episode is that despite everyone's lives continuing people struggle and we need to keep an eye on our family and friends. Coronation Street dedicating the episode to Rugby League Legend, Rob Burrows was an incredibly wonderful thing for the show to do.

Talking of the episode, Peter Ash said: “I feel incredibly proud to have worked on this episode. From the moment I read the script I knew it was going to be something really special (mostly because I couldn't stop crying!) I loved being able to record Paul's inner thoughts, showing us the mind is still 100%, even with MND. I hope the audience enjoys it, as everyone involved gave their all!”

Daniel Brocklebank, who plays Billy Mayhew is an Ambassador of the MND Association who of filming this episode said: “There were times I burst into tears on set during the filming of this episode. There was one day I got in the car after work, and I just wept. Pete and I have been living in an emotional state for a while now with this storyline, and obviously because we have played it out in real time. Seeing Pete in that condition is so emotional to play. Pete's performance and his attention to detail has been incredible, I'm hoping that he wins all the awards, he deserves it so much.”

This episode of Coronation Street aired on Friday 26th July in a one hour episode on ITV. Missed the episode? Catch up on ITVX.
