MY OPINION ON EASTENDERS 40TH ANNIVERSARY WEEK
This week's EastEnders episodes to celebrate its 40th anniversary has been brilliant and filled with a lot of nostalgia as we have seen past characters bought back as well as taking us viewers on an emotional rollercoaster.
One thing EastEnders do extremely well are stunts and this week's was no exception with Reiss Colwell's car smashing into The Queen Vic leading to the pub collapsing with many residents inside allowing for the residents to work together to help/ save one another. The community feel all week has been wonderful to see, and one of the many reasons that I enjoy this show.
The anniversary episode itself on Wednesday (19th February) saw an hour-long episode where Sharon Watts hallucinated seeing Angie Watts bought back for a short scene that I have to admit, I loved and one secret I am glad the show managed to keep a secret - Anita Dobson it was brilliant to see the first landlady return, but Sharon was rescued by Grant Mitchell reminded me of the early years. However, I have to give credit for the way EastEnders continue to tackle hard-hitting subjects with Phil Mitchell' breakdown as well as Nigel Bates telling Phil about his dementia diagnosis which I have to say personally hit me having had a loved one go through this a few years ago. Also, with Sonia Fowler and Lauren Branning still trapped in The Queen Vic kitchen as Sonia went into labour. In the final scene of the episode, Martin Fowler was seen confessing to Stacey Slater that he loved her before telling her to get out and whatever he was holding fell on him leaving us viewers with a cliff-hanger.
*Going into the live episode, I had the biggest feeling that Martin was the one going to die as Sonia's baby was born.*
Tonight (20th February) saw the show go LIVE to celebrate their 40th is true EE style with the public voting leading to Denise Fox choosing Jack Branning and Sonia naming her baby Julia in a nod to one of the show's creators Julia Smith, there was something wonderful about the continuity as it seemed to follow nicely from last night's, I have to admit I was a little nervous as you never know. The camera angles which was brilliantly shot (credit to the camera team), and finally the Lauren Klee script who is one of my favourite soap writers was great as it was filled with a mix of emotions, the perfect dialogue but Lacey Turner and James Bye carried that episode with their fantastic acting they really do know each other's characters inside and out the marriage talk was great to hear as those characters belonged together, but poor Stacey lost Bradley Branning in the 25th anniversary live to not losing Martin in the 40th that poor character, but James Bye what a way for you to leave the show - what a stunt!
Thank you for the acting master class EastEnders.
Also, I have to add how wonderful it was to see most of the cast involved - as everyone has worked so hard to deliver this week's phenomenal episodes.
Can I also a big thank you for all the extra appearances from cast members on the TV in the lead up to the live as well as the Lock In with Joe Swash and the Instagram Live before the Live episode after the public vote closed.
Now the question remains, how will Stacey continue her life without Martin? How will she tell the kids?
