ALBUM REVIEW - CAM - THE OTHERSIDE

This Friday (30th October) will see US singer-songwriter, Cam releases her second album, The Otherside after 5 years.
The Otherside features 11 songs.

Redwood Tree starts with a upbeat instrumental which opens the song up wonderfully as it does for this album too. The first verse sees Cam's softer, and slower vocals at the forefront of the song which I love as it allows Cam's beautiful songwriting to shine through, and you to listen to every single word of the song fantastically. The chorus features some incredibly beautiful lyrics that I couldn't help but want to sing along with as they are so beautifully written. The chorus blends every single part of this story together wonderfully. The second verse of Redwood Tree is brilliant as the lyrics continue the story within the lyrics wonderfully with Cam's vocals still remaining a little softer allowing the vulnerability of the song to shine through. The final verse of Redwood Tree is one of pure honesty, and fabulousness that I couldn't help but find the most beautiful verse as it was the slower, and softest vocal of the song which allowed so much for the lyric coming across.

The Otherside starts with an dreamy but darker sounding instrumental which I like as it allows your mind to runaway with itself until the first verse sees Cam's crisp vocal at the forefront of the song which adds a lot of dynamic to the song baring in mind that the song has only just started. The lyrics have a really warm, and heartfelt feel to them. The chorus features Cam's more powerful vocal range which I just love as it adds another side to the lyrics, and the songs meaning which gave me goosebumps a few times. I caught myself so many times having a dance thanks to the instrumental, and wanting to sing a long a few times thanks to the lyrics being so catchy. The three verses of The Otherside blend together so beautifully. The Otherside has such a beautiful tone to the song has it ends in a wonderful way.

Classic starts with a quirky upbeat instrumental which is my personal favourite kind of start on a Cam track. The first verse sees Cam's funkier, and upbeat vocal at the forefront of the song which makes me want to instantly get up, dance, and sing along despite not knowing the lyrics. The chorus is super upbeat as it features some of the most beautiful lyrics of the song which are extremely catchy - ones I am excited to see Cam sing live. The second verse continues Classic fantastically, and really lively in a way that no artist in my opinion can as well as Cam does. The lyrics are super upbeat, and catchy throughout. The final verse of Classic is wonderful as it sees Cam's softer vocal be demonstrated in the most beautiful way as it goes into the final chorus especially.

Forgetting You has softer vocal from Cam throughout this song which I just adore as it allows us listeners a chance to hear Cam's vocal range stripped back in a way I wasn't expecting that amazed me and shows everyone what an amazing artist she is! The lyrics are written from a place of experience and honesty which I have to admit at times moved me thanks to Cam's vocal, and songwriting. The lyrics within the chorus are super honest, and written from a place of hurt wanting to inspire others and share her experiences which just goes to show what an artist, Cam is! The second verse of Forgetting You is the one verse that had me a little emotional as there was something so special about the lyrics leading into the chrous which was magical. The instrumental ahead of the final verse is just beautiful as it slowed the song down a little that was needed.

Like A Movie starts with an dreamy wild sounding instrumental that I happen to like the sound off as it is very different to all of the previous songs on this album. The first verse sees Cam's soft vocals at the forefront that allows the lyrics to shine through and the magical instrumental which teamed together works so beautifully. The chorus has some wonderfully dreamy lyrics that made me think about that one time in a cinema that we all have and its so magical. The second verse of Like A Movie continues wonderfully with the story of the lyrics being told so fantastically and written from the heart which is just incredibly beautiful listening. All the verse connect to the chorus so fantastically that is perfect!
The final verse of Like A Movie is perfectly slow allowing the listeners to hear Cam's fantastic vocal range. I adore that Like A Movie ends with the chorus bring the song together beautifully.

Changes has a guitar instrumental to start the song off which has a positive happy vibe to it from start to end. The first verse sees Cam's soft, crisp vocals at the forefront which allows the lyrics to have there moment to shine as the message within the lyrics is so beautiful you can tell there is something so magical about this song. The chorus of Changes features some incredibly beautiful lyrics that are so catchy, and one that many people will be able to relate with. There is something so magical about the song and the purity within the lyrics - goosebumps. The second verse of Changes continues with these happier life changing moments, whilst many others are still struggling makes you realise everyone's life journey is so different and this song helps you realise this. The whistling break up in the middle of the song is beautiful, and timed perfectly as it allows the listeners to really think about the lyrics they have just heard. I adore that the chorus brings Changes to an end as it ties the song together so beautifully.

Till There's Nothing Left starts with an drum instrumental which sounds very dark but I love that it suits the title of the song extremely well. The first verse sees Cam's softer vocal range at the forefront of the song which in turn allows the lyrics to be clearly demonstrated in a way that the listener can take their own interruption of the lyrics. The chorus features many wonderful lyrics that you can hear how much the lyrics mean to Cam in her delivery, whilst also reminding so clear and honest. The lyrics are catchy. The second verse continues Till There's Nothing Left fantastically as the softer vocal continues allowing the song to beautifully continue fantastically with it's catchy, and upbeat vocals towards the end of this verse. The final verse of Till There's Nothing Left is a lot slower that I wasn't expecting but one that worked wonderfully especially as it heads into the final chorus which is a little more upbeat.

What Goodbye Means has Cam's vocals right from the start in a beautifully poignant way as it has the instrumental come in after a few seconds. The first verse sees Cam's warm crisp vocal at the forefront which allows the meaning of the lyrics to come across wonderfully and in a way that the instrumental isn't too powerful for the message being sung. The chorus features some incredibly beautiful heartfelt lyrics that I caught myself being able to relate too, and my god I had tears in my eyes as I was listening to this song inparticular of this album. The second verse of What Goodbye Means continues with softer vocals from Cam were are incredibly moving, and you can hear a vulnerability from Cam as she is singing every single lyric showing what an amazing artist she is! The final verse of What Goodbye Means is one of those verses that get you thinking once more as it leads into the final chrous which ends the song perfectly!

Diane sees Cam start with song off acoustically with her stunning vocal before an amazing quirky upbeat instrumental comes in. The first verse sees Cam showcase her gorgeous vocal tone with her meaningful lyrical ability. The honesty within her vocals are perfect, the story within the song is one of pure honesty, and hurt that you can't help but feel sorry for her. The chorus features some of my favourite lyrics of the song thanks to it's catchiness, and its believable lyrics - you can really hear this sense of hurt that is heart-breaking. The second verse continues Diane as it's like the next chapter in the song, and its about yourself (the one that you should be putting first instead of hurting by going through all of this). You deserve respect. The little instrumental in the middle of Diane break the song up fantastically. The final verse of Diane is a little slower than the rest of the song, and one that is very much needed to hear certain lyrics slowed down a little going into the final chorus of the song.

Happier For You starts with a darker sounding church instrumental which for me is something I wasn't expecting but adds a lot of emotion to the show without any lyrics being sung. The first verse sees Cam's soft, gentle, and beautifully timed vocals at the forefront. The lyrics are ones that I caught myself listening very closely too. The message within the lyrics is beautiful, and one I have a feeling many people will like and appreciate. The chorus features some incredibly beautiful and poignant lyrics that many people will relate with as they are listening (I hope!) as the message is just so personally which you can tell Cam has written right from the heart. The second verse of Happier For You continues with Cam's emotionally toned vocals which blend so well with the lyrics being sung. The moment the verses go into the chorus I am in awe of Cam's vocal range. The final verse of Happier For You is one of pure emotion that you can understand and all the feels are strongly driven, and the chorus my god I am an emotional wreck listening.

Girl Like Me starts with a softer piano instrumental which I just love as it is a very different start to the other tracks on this album. The first verse sees Cam's softer vocal at the forefront with an extremely emotional tone which has me captivated right from the start as it appears to be written from the heart based on personal experience. The chorus of Girl Like Me features some incredibly beautiful and poignant lyrics that a lot of people will be able to relate too in their lives whether it's now, in their pasts or in their future because with a song like this out there I am sure it will help many other people realising that they are not alone in their feelings. The second verse of Girl Like Me continues with Cam's softer but more emotional tone which is just that makes the song even more powerful but it works incredibly perfectly! The piano instrumental in the middle of the song is just beautiful. The final verse of Girl Like Me is one of purity and heartbreak that you can hear so much emotion within. I have one word for this song - WOW!!
