SOPHOMORE ALBUM REVIEW - LINDSAY ELL - HEART THEORY

This Friday (14th August) will see Canadian singer-songwriter, Lindsay Ell release her sophomore album, Heart Theory.
Heart Theory is made up of 12 songs of which Lindsay co-wrote 11.

Heart Theory is set to take listeners through journey of seven stages of grief.

'Heart Theory is a beautifully delivered album by Lindsay demonstrating so much loss with a lot of meaning making this album ground-breaking.'

Hits Me has a very funky upbeat electric guitar instrumental which for me is something that instantly screams Lindsay Ell is here. The first verse of Hits Me sees Lindsay's funkier vocals at the forefront of this song with her wonderfully written lyrics that are written right from the heart. The chorus of Hits Me features some incredibly catchy lyrics that make me want to get up and dance instantly because the message within the song is so beautiful. I love the moral of this song as its very different to what I expected especially from the title. The lyrics seem very relatable. The second verse continues Hits Me wonderfully with it's catchy lyrics, and meaningful vocals about the thoughts of future and relationships which is just amazing. Love hearing relatable moments in a song. The final verse of Hits Me is a little slower but works so well as it allows the lyrics there moment to shine, and the electric guitar solo is rather special as it breaks the song up ahead of the final chorus ending the song rather beautifully.

how good starts with a funkier electric guitar which instantly gives you this very Lindsay Ell feel which I adore. The first verse of how good sees Lindsay's funkier upbeat vocal tone at the forefront of the song which allows us listeners to hear the attention to detail within Lindsay's vocal ability. The chorus features beautifully upbeat lyrics that get you thinking, and want to dance along too. how good is a proper feel good anthem that I am very pleased Lindsay has chosen to add to this album. The second verse continues how good wonderfully with the upbeat tempo remaining which adds so much more to the song - I have nothing but praise for this song. The instrumental break down in the middle of how good  is just everything giving the song another layer which is just wonderful to hear. The final verse of how good is just as beautifully as the rest of the song allowing the most wonderful lyrics of the song shine through in this verse. The final chorus of how good is just a fantastic ending for this song.

I don't lovE you starts with a very sad sounding instrumental that I can't help but feel very emotional over despite having not heard a single word. The first verse sees Lindsay's soft heartfelt vocal at the forefront of this song as you get to hear this real raw, and emotional vocal that I have to admit I wasn't expecting. The chorus features emotionally hitting lyrics that I can't help but feel extremely hard hit by. The why in which Lindsay sings the chorus is something I wasn't expecting as her music is normally very upbeat, sassy but this is the complete opposite - and you know what I love it but the sadness is heart-breaking. The second verse of I don't lovE you continues with a raw, and emotional vocal which starts so much more to the song and it's lyrics. The final verse of I don't lovE you sees Lindsay focus on the most important lyrics that she wants to highlight within the song which is just wonderfully heading in the final chorus that is a little louder than the previous verses on this song.

wAnt me back starts with an softer electric guitar instrumental which instantly gives us listeners a sense of hurt right from the start. The first verse starts with some lyrics that I caught myself relating to so much, and it got me thinking that's ok to have these thoughts - we are all human. The message within the first verse is something that is wonderful as it links to the chorus wonderfully. The chorus features some rather catchy, and upbeat lyrics however at the same time ones that a lot of us will be able to relate too. I was listening to the chorus in tears. The second verse continues wAnt me back with Lindsay's softer vocal tone which allows the lyrics to just roll off her tongue, whilst allowing us listeners to still be able to feel something of the lyrics. wAnt me back is a song about self-worth, and self importance and with messages like this being shared, I have goosebumps. The bridge of wAnt me back is something so very special and unique that also gave me a WOW moment. Lindsay is one hell of a singer/ songwriter. The electric guitar throughout the song brings a lot to the song in general as well as supporting Lindsay's vocals wonderfully.

get oveR you starts off with a softer electric guitar instrumental which gives the song an amazing introduction. The first verse of get oveR you sees Lindsay's soft vocal range at the forefront of the song allowing the extremely heartfelt lyrics to shine through which are compliments fantastically with her vocal tone. The chorus features some incredibly emotive lyrics that got me thinking right from the start, and you can feel a lot of hard from Lindsay within her song writing which for me is something I love to hear as it adds so much more to the song. The second verse continues get oveR you wonderfully as the story within the lyrics continue fantastically as you hear the amount of Lindsay went through in that situation. I love the sassy girl power kind of sass too. The final verse sees Lindsay's more vocal sassiness which I adore as it adds something magical to the song complimented fantastically by the electric guitar instrumental throughout.

wrong girl starts with an electric guitar instrumental very Lindsay which I am loving hearing on this album. The first verse of wrong girl sees Lindsay's sassy vocal range at the forefront of the song which is nothing short of incredible, the emotions within the first verse just hit you in a way I for sure wasn't expecting. The chorus features some incredibly beautifully written lyrics written from the heart with pure sassiness. The second verse continues wrong girl wonderfully as the story continues with the fact that you can't help but feel sorry for being "wrong girl" and how she is feeling, most of us girls have been through too so it speaks to a lot of us. The bridge of wrong girl sees Lindsay's softer vocal tone return showcases the most beautiful lines of the song in a stand out kind of way leading into the final chorus of the song.

body language of breakup starts with a very different kind of instrumental with the electric guitar coming in a little later on this song. The first verse of body language of breakup sees Lindsay's soft, and meaningful vocal start the song allowing the beautiful lyrics, and story to shine through in the most relatable way. The chorus features beautiful lyrics throughout body language of breakup that are written from a place of heartbreak but the empowerment within the lyrics are just the perfect blend. The second verse continues body language of breakup fantastically as the lyrics are about the next stage within a break up, and how your friends are involved. I have nothing but praise for this song. The electric guitar instrumental is perfect supporting Lindsay's softer vocal range especially going into the final verse of the song. I couldn't help but sing along with the final verse, and chorus which are absolutely beautiful.

good on you starts with an upbeat drum, and electric guitar instrumental setting the song off in the right way. The first verse of good on you sees Lindsay's soft vocal giving an emotional side to the lyrics which for me are ones that get you thinking right from the start with you thinking about your past relationships. The chorus features some incredibly sassy wonderful upbeat lyrics about the next stage after a break up and the sadness you feel whilst they continue to be happy in a new relationship. The second verse continues good on you wonderfully as it portrays the next stage of a relationship ending in a fabulous way allowing the lyrics to be compliments by Lindsay's vocals wonderfully at all times. The final verse of good on you features some wonderfully emotive lyrics that you hear so well in the lyrics especially leading into the final chorus which ends the song beautifully.

The oTHEr side starts with a slow, and softer electric guitar instrumental which Lindsay quickly brings into her own. The first verse of The oTHEr side sees Lindsay's softer vocal at the forefront of the song in the most beautiful way which allows the lyrics to have there moment to shine through, and listeners get to hear the vulnerability within Lindsay's vocals. The chorus has some beautiful lyrics that also feature some incredibly emotional lyrics that got me thinking many times. The second verse continues The oTHEr side wonderfully with Lindsay discovering her self worth, and determination to not let the bad times define who she is, and this is why this song is an amazing one for this album. The electric guitar instrumental in the middle of the song is just a wonderful break up allowing the song to grow in a natural way. The final verse sees an extremely thankful side of the song for the experience she gained within this life experience leading into the final chorus which is an amazing end.

gO to starts with an upbeat instrumental which quickly leads into the first verse of gO to which sees Lindsay's vocal a little soulful in her softer vocal tone that allow the lyrics to shine through instantly in a super sweet way especially as it leads into the chorus. The chorus features incredibly soulful, and meaningful lyrics that are just beautiful to listen too, and you can hear so much more meaning of the lyrics as Lindsay allows the song to grow. The second verse continues gO to is wonderful as it sees a natural growth for the song as its the next chapter of the situation, which had me a little emotional as we all want that special someone. Once again there is an electric guitar instrumental in the middle of the song which adds so much dynamic to the song that I love so much. The final verse of  gO to features some of it's most beautiful lyrics in a much softer vocal from Lindsay that is just magical, and amazing leading into the final chorus of the song. Everything about gO to is perfect!

make you starts with a rather vulnerable sounding piano instrumental which instantly moved me. The first verse sees Lindsay's soft and vulnerable vocal at the forefront of the song as you can hear a really raw, and emotional story from the lyrics being sung. The truth within the lyrics were something that moved me behind words especially as you can hear the bravery at times within Lindsay's vocal - many times I was in tears. The chorus features some more emotional emotive lyrics, and vocal range from Lindsay that you can hear so much truth within. make you is one song that really stops you in your tracks, and you can't help but feel extremely moved everytime I hear this part of the song. The second verse continues as you feel the truth within this song continuing as the vulnerability of Lindsay's vocals continue with so much more emotion, that is just so incredibly moving. make you continues to stop me in my tracks. The instrumental break up within the last minute of the song was so incredibly beautiful, and powerful especially with the electric guitar. make you ending with the chorus is just perfect, and ties the song together rather beautifully. Thank you for being brave enough to write this song, Lindsay!

ReadY to love starts with an amazing electric guitar instrumental which is Lindsay's signature sound which I more than enjoy listening too throughout her music. The first verse sees Lindsay's softer vocal at the forefront of ReadY to love with her heartfelt lyrics which you can instantly tell Lindsay has written this song from her heart, and based on a personal experience. The chorus of ReadY to love is just beautiful, and one that is so beautifully empowering with very catchy lyrics that I love making me want to get up and dance whilst enjoying this songs wonderful message. The second verse continues ReadY to love wonderfully with Lindsay soft vocals returning after the upbeat chorus you hear within Lindsay's vocal that this verse is the next part of the story which is just beautiful to hear. Love that Lindsay isn't afraid to show an extremely personal side to who she is as an artist. I adore the fact that  ReadY to love ends with an instrumental which allows Lindsay to showcase her incredible electric guitar playing skills.

Heart Theory is a beautiful delivered album by Lindsay demonstrating so much loss with a lot of meaning making this album ground-breaking.
