*MY OPINION* WHY ISABELLE SMITH HAS BEEN A BRILLIANT ADDITION TO HOLLYOAKS 2024
It's crazy to think that Isabelle Smith only arrived on our screens back in January as Frankie Osborne seeing the character involved in hard-hitting storyline for her character, however since February, Frankie has had tough relationship with Osborne family especially Nancy and Jack which looking back now you can see the cries for help with her moods, attitude, and vulnerability that have changed over the past year, but her relationship with her father, Darren was great to see develop. However, one of my favourite moments came as Frankie learnt sign language to communicate with Oscar allowing for the caring side to the character to come through.
As soon as Frankie Osborne arrived in the village with JJ in January, I remember this scared character slowly seeing her sadness explained.
Back in the middle of August, Hollyoaks viewers saw the most vulnerable scenes from Frankie has her ordeal was finally revealed as Darren picked up on the look that JJ gave Frankie during his football signing. The amount of detail within the care of the delivery in Friday 16th episode as Frankie opened up to her father in an emotional moment for the pair that continued on Monday 19th, the hug between father and daughter after these extremely powerful scenes was great for both character as Frankie felt believed.
Viewers on Friday 6th September saw Frankie give her statement to the police regarding her ordeal with her twin, JJ allowing for Isabelle's vulnerability during these episodes to shine through. This is something that the young actress does wonderfully well in my opinion and why she deserves recognition. Hollyoaks' stunt week saw Suzanne Ashworth finally say that she believed her daughter before she died.
With Frankie having dance as an escape it was during the flash forward, viewers learnt Frankie attended dance school, however something happened that changed the character which I am intrigued to learn as it could explain why she has went off the rails. The bond between Darren and Frankie has been an interesting one as one minute they are getting stronger then the next struggling but it's great as Isabelle and Ashley Taylor Dawson work extremely well together.
Frankie's friendship with Vicky and Leah Barnes has been a wonderful to see especially during her time of need, but it's been good to see Vicky being the one allowing Frankie to smile again and supporting her friend when needed.
During the trial episodes, the vulnerable side of Frankie was shown once again in some worrying moments that her family rallied around her, but Frankie standing up to JJ in hospital many times was fantastic as you could see how much the character needed that moment showing a great deal of strength and the need for her to get answers as she wanted JJ to face up to what he did. There was also a moment of sadness in October as Frankie confronted JJ with them taking a trip down memory lane full of sadness and moments that hit home for the siblings, but JJ admitting to Frankie and recording a video was a little bit of closure that Frankie needed - Ryan Mulvey delivered these scenes well.
However, that Mercedes McQueen chat in September was great especially as it was unexpected.
Frankie's been good friends with Lucas Hay but when she learnt that his boyfriend Dillion Ray cheated on him with his sister Leah after catching him looking at baby James like he did, Frankie was determined to be there for her best friend, however last month when the writers decided that Frankie and Lucas were going to kiss it was like they were trying to ruin their friendship which thankfully they didn't.
Frankie really has been through a lot and it looks like the start of 2025 will see the character face trial against JJ in which I sense will be an emotional rollercoaster.
Isabelle Smith, you are a phenomenal actress and I know I say this a lot but you really deserve to receive so much praise for your performances especially the vulnerable ones as you can see how much research has gone into them!
The fact that Isabelle won Best Newcomer at The Inside Soap Awards in September as well as winning The Caroline Aherne Award for Best Breakthrough at The RTS North West, I am so proud and pleased that you are finally getting the recognition you deserve!
