HOLLYOAKS REVIEW - ISABELLE SMITH CAPTURES THE EMOTIONAL AND VULNERABLE SIDE OF FRANKIE BRILLIANTLY

It's hard to believe that Isabelle Smith only arrived on our screens in the Chester based soap Hollyoaks in January 2024 which has seen her character, Frankie Osborne go through some tough times.

Over the past few months in Hollyoaks, Frankie Osborne has had a tough time, but viewers have seen Grace Black support Frankie during Monday 22nd July's episode on E4 where Frankie opened up to her uncle, Freddie Roscoe who was in a coma at the time. You could see a change in the character once this had happened as the vulnerability shines through in an emotional scene. You can really understand the turmoil in Frankie as all she wants to do is protect her loved ones.

*Written as I watched on E4*

During last Thursday's episode (15th August) viewers saw the start of Frankie breaking down following her ordeal which saw her become even more anxious around her brother, JJ following her slip-up during a conversation with Darren Osborne, you only had to look at her body language. However, it was last Friday's episode (16th August) an episode mix of emotions when JJ followed her into the changing rooms with Frankie's vulnerability showing - so powerful with the emotions portrayed by Isabelle Smith bringing a tear to my eye which continued as Frankie opened up to Darren as they can't have been easy, you can hear the fear in her voice. However, in a sweet moment came at the end of the episode when Darren said that he loved Frankie that you could tell that she needed to hear when led her to telling her dad about everything in a powerful moment!

However, the way that Frankie chose Darren to open up to after all these years of suffering thanks to JJ made me emotional and I really felt for Frankie who I hope now gets the support that she needs and opens up to her loved ones.

I have nothing but praise for Ashley Taylor-Dawson's reaction to Frankie's revelation in Monday's episode (19th August) as it couldn't have been easy for him to hear, but the sensitivity that was delivered was great to see. The hug between father and daughter as she revealed the existent was beautiful. Wow, these scenes are powerful. The way that Darren just wanted to protect Frankie was wonderful to see as everything has been about JJ, however it was Darren's heated conversation that saw him realise his daughter is telling the truth. Suzanne Ashworth's reaction where do I begin!

Frankie had a nightmare during Tuesday's (20th August) episode seeing Darren reassure her in a lovely moment which was followed by some emotional father and daughter scenes throughout the episode. That fact that Suzanne still believed JJ's honestly made me angry the more I heard the background. I am glad Hollyoaks are doing this storyline and raising awareness for this tough subject. Darren being the protective father is brilliant to see as Frankie told her mother about everything that happened as she opened up about what happened growing up and the extent shocked Darren, you only had to look at Ashley's facial expressions. Later, Suzanne called round to see her daughter when it was seen that she took Frankie's phone and binned it - all I can think of this is that she is torn as to who to believe, but let's be honest we all know that she believes JJ.

Suzanne returned to the Osborne family home to an emotional Frankie during Wednesday's episode (21st August) in a heated argument. With Jack worried about his son as he is only protecting his daughter, I just hope Darren doesn't bottle everything up. I get that Darren wants to protect his daughter but he needs to open up to someone.

David Crowley, thank you for your wonderfully captured episodes with a great eye for detail. The amount of care is great to see, I have nothing but praise for your hard work on these episodes.

Isabelle Smith, where do I begin after your incredible performances during these episodes, you continue to amaze me! I have a feeling many awards are coming your way and so deservingly. Can't wait to see you get the recognition you deserve!

Thank you Hollyoaks for raising awareness on such a taboo subject, just think of all the people you are reaching by doing this storyline.

You can watch Hollyoaks Monday - Friday on E4 at 7pm with First Look episodes following at 7.30pm on Channel 4 streaming.
