*OPINION* WHY A TWO-HANDLER EPISODE FEELS NEEDED FOR EMMERDALE'S AARON AND ROBERT

With Emmerdale doing many special episodes so far in 2026, I personally really feel that a two-handler episode focusing on Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle is very much needed especially after 6 years which viewers spent without Robert Sugden until he returned on Wednesday 28th May, 2025 it's safe to say there is a lot of history that still needs to be unwrapped.

Even though Robert's childhood trauma was slightly touched upon back in 2017, and once again during last Thursday's episode (12th February), I still feel like this is a lot that needs to be unboxed allowing for some more of Robert's back story to come to light especially as we look forward to the farm era of the Sugden legacy returning with Aaron Dingle by his side.

Robert and Aaron definitely need to have some rather difficult conversations regarding Robert's prison trauma that was slightly touched upon back in November during the special episode, however I definitely feel that there is more Robert is holding back - I've said it before and I'll say it again Robert needs a PTSD storyline especially after those flashback scenes which would explain a lot more about how/ why the change in the character happened.

Addressing both Aaron and Robert's mental health as let's be honest they both suffered whilst they were apart, this is something that I feel hasn't been addressed properly along with the heartbreak of their marriage back in 2019 as they both went down roads that had they have had one another's support to lean on, possibly could have been different. However, an honest talk about their relationship would seem fitting, as well as them both opening up more about their past relationships with John Sugden and Kev Townsend - these relationships changed them.

Also, we know that Robert wants his son, Seb back in his life and I think Aaron's ready to be the protective partner Robert needs, however if it's anything like the pre-prison era of the couple there has to be a proper conversation about how they are to approach it this time around.

An open and honest scene about everything that happened in-between (those 6 years apart) that we are yet to learn anything about, if you ask me there has been a massive change within the characters and yes I know a little can be expected, but there still feels like something is unexplained.

Finally before Robron get married again (hopefully for the last time!), there has to be a heartfelt chat about how they feel about one another without them worrying about hurting one another because I feel it's gonna be tough not because they don't love each other, but because of their marriages to John and Kev.

Emmerdale airs Monday - Friday at 8pm on ITV1, and YouTube, and ITVX from 7am.
