INTERVIEW WITH NEW ARTIST MOLLY-ANNE

This week's interview is with British singer-songwriter, Molly-Anne who is based in Bristol as we get to know her and listen about her Country Music plans for the year!
Molly-Anne's new single Glow is out 9th February, 2018.

Hello Molly-Anne. Thank you for agreeing to our interview.
Firstly could we ask you to introduce yourself?
Hi! My name is Molly-Anne, I’m 23 years old and an aspiring singer-songwriter from the South West of the UK. My music has an acoustic singer-songwriter vibe, inspired by Country and Folk with a touch of indie.

How old were you were you decided to start writing your own songs? And when did you write and perform your first song? Where did you first perform any of yours songs and how old were you?
I was 11 when I first picked up an electric guitar. My inspirations at the time were Billy Joe Armstrong from Green Day, Jimmy Hendrix and Kurt Cobain, I wanted to rock! My ear has changed a little since then but I still love to pick up an electric when I can. I was 12 when I played my first show at our local music festival and started writing songs in an all-female punk band soon after that. We were terrible but it was great fun! I played in a few indie bands and a country-style acoustic duo whilst I was at uni but It wasn't until late 2017 that I gave up my career in fashion journalism to pursue a life as a singer-songwriter. Here I am today, 2 months in and loving every minute!

What is your favourite country song and who is your favourite country artist (can be more than one)?
Bob Dylan is a huge inspiration of mine. His song 'Don't Think Twice, It's Alright' is heartbreakingly beautiful and I think his lyrics are full of meaning. I love Nashville and I'm having a bit of a Miranda Lambert moment, I reckon she's so much fun! Laura Marling is a fantastic songwriter and I appreciate her music is outstanding and meticulously crafted. Other than that, UK artist Philippa Hanna is a big inspiration of mine, check out her newest album, and the classic songwriters also do a lot for me; Eva Cassidy, Joni Mitchell and Dolly Parton.

What is the most inspirational song you have heard?

I feel that inspiration can derive from many factors of music and over my musical education I've been wooed by many, many beautiful songs. In terms of lyrics, I can't stop listening to Philippa Hanna's 'Off The Wagon' it's so uplifting and positive! In terms of musicality, Newton Faulkner and John Mayer never fail to amaze me with their unbelievable instrumental skill.

Now to talk about your plans for 2018;

So Molly-Anne, can we expect any new music from? If so, when?
New music is coming very soon! We have been working hard on a demo EP and have set our release date for February 9th 2018. The demo is a collection of three of my tracks that will be available on Spotify, iTunes and to purchase as a physical CD. A huge thank you to the gifted and hard-working Andy Guy who engineered, produced and recorded my whole EP!

Are you planning on touring the UK?
I'm in discussions at the moment with my tour manager to set up some dates across the UK. I haven't played many shows up North yet, so I'm really hoping to get myself up there sometime soon. Once my new demo drops we'll be on the van doing shows everywhere!

How do you find the UK Country Music Scene?
The UK Country scene is somewhat small and niche but so friendly and welcoming. The fans and listeners are dedicated music-lovers who really appreciate and examine musical structure and good musicianship. The other artists on the scene are wonderful and I've already made some fantastic friends in the little time I've been involved. I'm excited to learn more about the scene and watch it grow!

Thank you for your time, Molly-Anne.
Thanks so much.

  1. A great interview Kellie,I was lucky to see Molly in January when she played a set at the Fleece acoustic afternoon, I enjoyed her set, Molly played guitar & harmonica and she was accompanied by her father who played cajan. I also met Molly before & after her set. I hope to see her playing again.
